Lithium

treatment for gif.gif

Mood disorders can be successfully managed using a variety of treatments. Amongst the many medications used to treat depressive and bipolar disorders lithium is unequalled because of its specificity of action and unique additional therapeutic properties. By virtue of its prophylactic properties, lithium is the only medication that fulfils the criteria of a genuine mood stabiliser. However, to derive maximal benefit from lithium it is best to monitor its efficacy and side effects by regularly measuring its plasma levels (See The Lithiumeter below).

Research

We are assessing clinical and biological markers of patients prescribed lithium, to optimise its use in clinical practice by:

  • Developing evidence-based tools to assist clinicians in the management of mood disorders

  • Understanding how lithium can be utilised to achieve mood stability and prevent suicide

The significance of this research

  • Understanding the mechanisms of lithium’s anti-suicidal properties will enable more targeted and timely treatment.

  • Individualising lithium therapy will enhance the prognosis and quality if life of those needing this medication.

  • Our research directly informs education of physicians and patients and their carers and facilitates the development of evidence-based materials for the management of mood disorders.
