Resilience
The precise nature of the underlying mechanisms that lead to the development of mood disorders is unknown. Identifying and understanding these components will reveal novel targets for prevention and effective treatment.
Two key processes that are of particular interest are the role of irritability in the development of psychiatric disorders, and the sophisticated processes that underpin the formation of resilience.
Research
Our current research projects are aiming to:
Examine the experience of irritability and understand why it is so prevalent across many psychiatric disorders.
Disentangle the relationships between irritability and other symptoms of mood disorders.
Develop a model of resilience that tracks its development through childhood and adolescence.
Understand how resilience is shaped through the experience of adversity.
The significance of this research
Our research will:
Reveal how key factors contribute to the emergence of mood disorders
Identify modifiable mechanisms
Provide realistic targets for interventions
